Kyle Standing | Perth Draftsman & Building Designer

I’m Kyle Standing, a draftsman and building designer based in Perth. My background brings together residential drafting, experience working for builders and a civil engineering degree. What interests me most is the process of taking an idea, thinking it through and putting it into drawings that make it easier to understand.

For me, drafting and design belong together. Design is where I explore how a building or space could work. Drafting is where those ideas become more precise, with the dimensions, relationships and details that give a proposal its shape. I enjoy both sides of that process and the careful thinking each one requires.

How I Started in Drafting

I began drafting at 18 while studying at TAFE. It gave me an early introduction to the relationship between a drawing and the building it represents. I learned to appreciate the importance of clear plans and the thought that goes into even a relatively simple layout.

I later gained experience working for builders. That added a practical perspective to my drafting background and helped me understand why drawings need to communicate well to people with different roles in a project. It is an outlook that continues to shape my work today.

My Education and Engineering Background

I hold a Certificate IV in Residential Drafting and a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) with First-Class Honours from Edith Cowan University. My engineering degree built on my drafting foundation, strengthening my technical understanding and the way I approach problems.

My work is as a draftsman and building designer. Engineering is part of my educational and professional background, informing the way I think about details, ask questions and consider how individual decisions affect the wider design.

What Matters to Me in Building Design

I’m interested in buildings that work well for the people using them. A layout should make sense in everyday life, with thought given to how spaces connect and what each area needs to do. Appearance is part of that, alongside comfort, function and practicality.

I like starting with the reasons behind a project. Understanding what someone wants to change, keep or improve gives the design a purpose. From there, I can explore ideas and use drawings to make those conversations more specific.

My Approach to Detailed Drafting

I value drawings that are clear, considered and easy to follow. Plans give people something concrete to discuss, helping them see how an idea fits together and where it may need more attention. My experience also includes 3D visualisation, which offers another way to understand a proposed space.

I founded Perth Drafting Service, where I put this approach into practice across residential and commercial projects. At the heart of my work is the same interest that brought me into drafting: understanding how things fit together and finding a clear way to communicate the result.
